To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter to express my interest in Teaching English as a Foreign Language in South Korea. I understand that this is quite an undertaking in itself, however, as you will see in my resume, I have at least four years experience working with children. As a Young Scholar Buddy/Knowledge is Power Coach, we assisted youth in expressing themselves through art, poetry, music or any other outlet that could be used as a vessel of frustration, in order to keep the youth out of gangs and off the streets. As Program Instructor/Teacher, I supervised youth between ages of 6 – 13, in groups of 10 – 15 students as part of afterschool program. I also tutored these youth in Math and Reading, as well as English and Social Studies. I also co-coached the 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball team. In addition to this experience, I worked as Program Coordinator for the Safe And Sound Program, a program designed to combine educational and extra-curricular activities for afterschool in hopes that these programs would reduce crime and gang activity in the inner city of Milwaukee.
As a result of my experience, working with children has always been such an enriching experience. Although arduous at times, the bond that can develop between a teacher and his/her students transcends the classroom, and extends throughout your life. Assuming it is safe to say that we may not remember all of our teachers, the teachers we do remember have left an indelible mark for reasons other than just teaching methods. In retrospect, the teachers that I have held in high regard have been the teachers whom have a passion for his/her students. I relish the opportunity of sharing the passion of learning and teaching with the young minds of South Korea. Although cliché, the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and I would feel privileged to have assisted in the perpetuation of this process.
Learning a new culture is also a big part of this decision, for a different perspective on the way of life is always gratifying. I look forward to learning a new language, experiencing different food, and possibly studying a martial art. I also hope to share something new with the culture from my personal standpoint. We are forever involved in the learning process, so the exchange of myself with the people of South Korea, I pray, would a blossoming of new ideas with respect to honor and tradition of the Korean culture.
