Murray Lawson Grafton – English Teacher
Personal Statement
I am an English teacher from Winnipeg, Canada. I began teaching in 1975 and have experience teaching all the English language courses offered in our high schools. I taught English at the junior high level for the first five years of my career and then moved to teaching English at the high school level for 25 years. I had the privilege of teaching courses in honours English, as well as Advanced Placement English courses in literature and language. I am 57 years old and have been married to my wife Jessica for 32 years. We have two adult sons, Darren aged 27 and Daniel aged 25.
In 2006-07 I taught English at an international school in Guangzhou, China. In 2007-08 I taught English at a Canadian high school for semester one and returned to teach in China for the second semester. As exciting as China has been, my wife and I wish to see more of what Asia has to offer.
I enjoy teaching and have been successful throughout my career. This is true whether the lesson occurs in the classroom, on the basketball court, or in the shadow of the Colosseum in Rome. I enjoy new experiences and feel that I have a great deal to offer students of English.
I have experience with living overseas. I am adaptable and interested in learning about other cultures. I have some ability in the French language.
Philosophy of Education
I believe that all children can learn and that all children want to learn. I believe that schools have the obligation to offer education that is relevant, meaningful, and challenging to every student. I think that teaching is a noble profession and that teachers play a significant role in shaping the future of society.
Teaching Strengths
My career experiences demonstrate that I am organized and hardworking. I am prepared and qualified to take on a position that requires independence and leadership. When I make a commitment to a project I see it through to the end.
My administrators have always made note of the strong relationships that I enjoy with my students. As a result, classroom management has been an area of strength in my teaching. I have a good appreciation of classic world literature and the teaching of writing. My classroom is an active and productive learning environment
