Ä¿¹ö·¹ÅÍ/À̷¼ As a Korean-American individual, I have encountered many cultural differences and challenges while growing up in the United States. As a child, I only knew how to communicate in Korean and was placed into an ESL program at my elementary school. Although I lived in the U.S. and I was surrounded by many Americans, my upbringings gave me a different perspective rooted in the mere fact I was born into a Korean family. Since my parents moved to the U.S. after growing up and learning everything in South Korea, I basically had to be proactive and learn all the nuances of the American culture on my own. This allowed me to open my eyes to new horizons and gave me a deeper appreciation for culture as a whole. At a young age, I was required to comprehend how all people are unique and that communication reaches far beyond just the language. Fast forwarding to my third year of college, I had the opportunity to live in France and South Africa for four months each and learned a great deal about different cultures. Through both experiences, I became equipped with stronger qualities of flexibility, adaptability, understanding, and the realization that ultimately, we are all united by a common desire for compassion and culture. Through teaching English in Korea as an ESL teacher, I will be able to obtain the opportunity to teach students a language that has opened up many doors for me, and it would be my absolute pleasure to return to the country where my family started. My educational philosophy can be traced back to one of my elementary school teachers. I had a teacher named Ms. Rowell whom I respected, admired, and learned a great deal from. She taught me how having a strong discipline on students isn¡¯t necessarily a wrong thing, even though as a child I thought it was a scary method teachers used. I recognized discipline was an integral part of teaching since the educator requires an organized classroom in order to be the most efficient. Since then, I have been exposed to different perspectives in the classroom as playing both the student and teacher role, and realized that each student is a unique individual who needs a caring, stimulating, and safe environment where he or she will be able to grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and intellectually. As an ESL teacher, I would strive to help students reach their full potential in the areas aforementioned that would encourage them to be open, creative, and curious in a secure learning atmosphere. In addition, I would encourage self-discovery, regardless of the age group I would teach, since each student would have different life experiences, meaning, and purpose. Through developing lesson plans that would cater to each student¡¯s interests, I would hope to foster motivation to learn more and to create a dialogue beyond the lessons. As an educator, I would strive to become the best ESL teacher I could be through instilling a passion for learning both inside and outside the classroom. I believe my unique experiences as a Korean-American individual and working with children in a school setting will contribute to the success I strive for if I get accepted as an English teacher. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to be considered for a teaching position and will follow up in less than two weeks. Thank you very much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
