Dear Sir/Madam,
As a graduate of the University of Ottawa, I have student teaching experience across the junior/senior high grade levels in both suburban and urban public school settings.
In addition to receiving the Ontario Teacher's Federation Prize for "academic excellence and outstanding qualities of leadership and character", I excelled at integrating modern technology into my practicum classes (drama, computer science, and film production) in exciting and innovative ways.
I went on to complete a masters of education program with high honours and was referred to the PhD program by my professors. During my studies, I was consistently employed by the university to teach. I assisted in the marking and delivery of courses at the B.Ed. level and served sports services as a Taekwondo instructor and recreational skating coach for ESL learners. I worked also for the city of Ottawa as a skating instructor teaching young children and adults alike.
During these years of instructional experience, I nurtured a soft spot for children and a love of education. I am patient, kind, good natured, energized, and a joke is never far from my lips. Since graduating, I have taken several contracts which demanded skills developed during my graduate work. I have worked professionally in the areas I teach (programming/web development, film/tv production, writing) and use my hands on real-world experience to inform classroom curriculum. I have worked in ESL environments as well as in those for the visually impaired.
I have particular interest in teaching abroad or in remote areas. I am young, well travelled (spent time in the UAE amongst many other countries) and hold the upmost respect for local laws and traditions. I am also an avid writer and photographer, and have a number of published/produced scripts, photos and articles to my name.
Currently I am registered as a casual substitute teacher with the Halifax Regional School Board, am licensed to teach in British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia, and look forward to the opportunity to discuss in person how my passion, experience, and skills will benefit your school and students. I would welcome an interview and hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Stevens M.Ed., B.Ed., B.A.
