°ÀÇ°æÇè I taught English from June 2004- August 2004 in Japan to middle school and high school students.
Ä¿¹ö·¹ÅÍ/À̷¼ In having a B.A. in English and Japanese, I have many qualities that will help me be a successful English Teacher.  I have always had an interest in English and have been reading and writing for most of my life.

In the summer of 2004 I was able to go to Japan and teach English to middle school students through a program called Guy Healy/JTB USA Summer Camp in Japan.  There I was one of several American counselors who worked with small groups of students to help them develop their English skills.  Camp sessions ran for three days and we were with our groups all day every day. The great thing about this program was that I was able to interact with them as a teacher and as a friend outside a classroom setting.  Some particular activities included writing short stories to develop their writing abilities and role playing to develop their speaking and listening skills. For each of these exercises they were to stand up in front of their group and be able to communicate with everyone in English.  In between these activities, I was able to relax with them and play games.  During these times, the students taught me more about Japanese culture and societal norms than I would be able to learn in any classroom.  I also believe that it was because of my experiences with that program that enabled my interest in learning the language and culture in college.

Also in living in the Midwest not many people have curiosity or awareness of international relations.  People are surprised to know of my interest in Asia and also my experiences of being there.  Most of their ideas of what it is really like are usually far from the truth.  In being able to teach and live in Korea I hope to bring my experiences back with me to share and further understanding and interest in international relations to the people of my area.

I hope to leave an understanding with students of what and who we are like.  They might even have a greater interest in traveling and experiencing America and the world themselves.  My fiancé Michael Nerbovig, who is also applying for this program, and I plan to travel and do things outside of teaching and through that be able to leave a better impression on Korean people as a whole of who Americans really are, which is not too different from themselves.
