I have eighteen months experience teaching English at Lee Hye Yeon hagwon in Suwon. I worked well at Lee Hye Yeon and I adapted to working in Korea better than many of my colleagues. I was often chosen by my supervisor to represent the foreign teachers at SAP (Speech Assessment Presentation), a speech competition for elementary school students. Although I enjoyed my time at Lee Hye Yeon, I would like to live in Seoul and try working under a different program.
I also have three months experience teaching English at C.E.S. in Dublin, Ireland. Most of the adult students I taught were Korean and I found most of them to be some of the best students I have ever taught.
During my masters at U.C.D. I tutored first year university students in Classical studies for one semester (September - December).
I also volunteered as a tutor to high school students for a six month period while studying at U.C.D.

I want to pursue a career in education. So, I am unlike many candidates who apply for jobs in Korea merely to live abroad or save money. As you can see from my resume I have a variety of teaching experience. I have taught English in Ireland to students from many different countries. I had classes of varying ages and levels. However, I gained the most teaching experience while I lived and worked in Suwon for eighteen months. I always worked very comfortably at my former hagwon and never had any problems with my supervisors, fellow teachers or students. I believe that I can work very well within the broader Korean educational system, be it at a hagwon, public school or even a university.
I also have some experience teaching other subjects to Irish school students and university students and these positions date back many years. This reflects my long-held interest in teaching and education.
I want to come back to Korea to gain further experience in a different setting and I'm looking for a position at a school or hagwon which is as dedicated to progressive forms of education as I am. I found my time in Korea enjoyable and rewarding and I am keen to expand upon it by working in Seoul.
I have a masters degree and also a certificate in English language teaching (CELT) which I feel makes me an ideal candidate for a variety of positions. I also have reference letters from my CELT trainer and my supervisor at Lee Hye Yeon in Suwon which attest to my strong work ethic and capabilities.
I have also found that, being Irish, I have a much more acute awareness of the differences between American English and British English than most people. I believe that Irish people are ideal English teachers as Hiberno-English (Irish English) incorporates grammar, vocabulary as well as pronunciation, intonation and stress patterns which are a blend of British and American English. |
