Until recently I have been teaching ESL in Korea to kindergarten and elementary students. Before I worked at a South African school (Potchefstroom Secondary) teaching Science (Grd 6) and Life Sciences (Grd 10). I can adapt to new circumstances and as I have one year experience of working in South Korea it will better my chances for a good job. I am also flexible and have good human relations and respect but also a humble personality. |

I have been teaching English for one year at a hogwan in Suwon, South Korea. It has been a great learning experience as I¡¯d never thought I would¡¯ve the ability to teach very young students as little as 6 years old. I had done lots of research about teaching in Korea and learned a lot regarding communication over the cultural barrier and learned again that human relations are very important especially when the Confucius system are still much in place.
I am interested in doing a TEFL and later a post-graduate educational certificate to improve my chances.
You should have a ¡®nice, calm¡¯ approach to teaching young kids. I was known as the ¡®kind¡¯ teacher in school not just because this was how I portrayed myself in the classroom but because I played myself, always. I noticed that the contract was not viewed the same way as the ¡®western world¡¯ normally ¡®viewed¡¯ contracts. This created sometimes confusion and mistrust at start but later on you accept that this was how things were done in Korea. I did some research before I went which assisted me a lot in coping with different circumstances.
I also accepted the fact that my particular school didn¡¯t have classroom assistants although it was mentioned in the contract but this I think is a good way of improving your self-esteem in a ¡®strange¡¯ situation.
I found the Korean people (although very isolated) friendly and kind. At the end of the day it is how you approach life and what you make of it.
