Dear Hiring Authority,

I am interested in a position as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher at either a public or private school. As a recipient of a degree in education and a two year veteran of teaching English in a Japanese high school, I believe I would be a positive and dynamic addition to any school. My varied employment background has allowed me to develop strong interpersonal skills, and through my teaching and travel experience I understand the importance of developing practical English communication.

It is obvious that I will be able to directly apply my B.A. in History Education and my two years of teaching experience in Japan to my success as an EFL instructor for. What may not be so obvious is that my prior non-teaching jobs also contribute to being an effective instructor. Working and managing in both retail and service industries afforded me the opportunity to hone my communication skills with a wide variety of people in varying situations. One of the most important skills for a bartender is to be able to talk to people and make them feel genuinely welcome and comfortable. This skill easily translates to making nervous or shy students feel comfortable enough to open up and really try to communicate in the classroom. One of the main reasons for my rapid promotions at prior jobs was my ability to effectively communicate with my staff as well as customers. I look forward to the opportunity to apply my person to person skills with both students and staff.

I am excited by the opportunity to help students develop and improve their speaking and listening fluency in practical English. As a teacher in a public Japanese high school, I've found that often the most effective instruction happens when interacting with my students outside of class. When the students feel free to communicate about topics that interest them and without the pressure of perfect grammar, real communication is more likely to happen. Once they gain this confidence, it is much easier to go back and 'fine-tune' their grammar within the classroom.

Having traveled to eight countries where English is not the first language, I know how important English is for communication in our global society. I have always been able to get by on my travels using English and only a smattering of the local dialect. Likewise, I witness other travelers whether European or Asian using English to communicate with the local population. There are so many issues concerning the environment and politics that concern Earth's entire population, not just a single country. English is one of the skills that these learners will need in order to become responsible global citizens and actively participate in these issues. I will use my international experience to help the students learn not just ¡°American English¡± but English that will aid them in their interaction with the entire global community.

I believe that my strong interpersonal skills along with my practical classroom and world experience would enable me to be an asset to any school¡¯s English instruction. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
