Currently I teach high school English in Korea at Yanggok High school near Gimpo and I can still remember the smell of the fresh rain in Northern California ,USA were I grew up and lived most of my life . In the eighth grade I earned the honor of being an Eagle Boy Scout, played baseball, enjoyed stamp collecting and can clearly remember the sound of dogs chasing me as I delivered newspapers after school. Throughout my high school years I played team sports like football and baseball, and even found time to learn SCUBA diving and was an active member of the Spanish club. During high school I had always dreamed of going to other countries, so I saved my money and was able to travel to Mexico during summer vacation. It was a fresh new feeling being able to discovery another culture. Graduation from high school came quickly and once again I was able to experience another new culture as I attended college in Hawaii. After two years transferred to a University in Southern California and studied Economics because I enjoyed International Business.
After graduating from the University I worked for a Trans Atlantic ocean shipping Container Corporation in logistics. I experienced many things here and was able to learn about different cultures and International Trade, but because of a change in world economics the company closed it's West Coast offices. I decided to be flexible and remembered an old saying- if you've got lemons make lemonade. People have always told me I am a passionate caring person, and communicate well, so I decided to pursue teaching. Choosing the education field has been a "calling” for me. I have always wanted to make a difference in a students life, I find great pleasure to see a young first year student who is shy and cannot speak English change into a more mature student who can now express themselves in English. I went back to school and started teaching at San Diego City Schools, in California
I have traveled extensively in Mexico, Central and South America, and because I am bilingual in Spanish, accepted an offer to teach English in Lima Peru. I taught English to second language learners as a certificated teacher in California for three years. After that, I taught English to college students and professionals in Peru for four years. The professionals I taught were from large multi-national companies. These companies included , Maersk Ocean Shipping. The President of Commercial Business Interbank-Peru’s Largest Bank, Marketing Director Banco Wiese, Marketing Director MiBanco, Banco Continental ,Chief Financial Officer Backus Cerveceria(beer brewing). Director of Oil Drilling Contracts Petro Peru. Pharmaceutical, Telephone, Airlines, Computers and non Profit entities including The World Bank ,IMF-Peru, Chemonics, Mining, Attorneys, Peruvian Government Tax Accountants, Oracle ,Motorola, Microsoft,Unilever,Colgate,Cadbury Adams,Hamburg SUD,Maersk Ocean Shipping Lines. I designed specific lesson plans for each. For example, I helped one dentist prepare for her Dental Exams to enter and practice dentistry in Australia. I assisted Peruvian tax attorneys, helped prepare the Peruvian Director of Oil Drilling contracts administer contracts and give speeches. In addition, I prepared the marketing team at Colgate, a multi-national Corporation, to give oral marketing presentations to their corporate office. At Avon Corporation Peru, a multi-national, I developed the English proficiency of the employees in Marketing, IT, Production, and New Products areas.
Ever since I lived in Hawaii I have had a respect and curiosity for the Asian culture. I also have a passion for teaching, and now after teaching in Korea for one year have discovered a fondness for the Korean culture. Also, sharing my knowledge with other people is wonderful; this will contribute to the productivity of English education here in Korea as I smell the summer rains here and pursue my passion for teaching. My experience teaching in Korea has made me a better-rounded teacher, especially as I coached the students to their first ever IYF speech contest. My decision to go into education was that I decided to want to make children love learning and show them how fun and interesting learning can be. I bring to you many well-rounded life experiences which I feel would be helpful in teaching in Korea. My philosophy of teaching includes passion and compassion. I speak Spanish which is not my native language, so I know what it takes to learn a new language. Teaching a language includes involving the students in activities and learning the culture as well, with lots of patience and understanding.
