Dear Sir or Madam:
I would like to express my interest in taking a position teaching English in Seoul, South Korea. I believe that it will prove a great opportunity for me, as it aligns perfectly with my academic and professional aspirations; more importantly, I believe that my academic background, my natural curiousity, my work ethic and recent life experiences make me ideally qualified to take on such a position.
My academic experience (a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Psychology from the College of William and Mary) has given me a background in linguistics. It has also allowed me to take many classes on East Asian history and culture, and given me an increased understanding of how the human mind works and, more importantly, learns. I would enjoy applying these characteristics toward honing my teaching abilities - employing them to provide my students with the best possible learning experience. Further, my recent post-college global travels have provided me with many opportunities to improve my communication skills with people from diverse cultures and with diverse backgrounds. Since leaving school, I have made brief, week-long trips to Chile, Argentina and the UK, and have spent the last 3 months in New Zealand. In doing so, I have not only been able to encounter these places' unique cultures and ways of life, but also spent a great deal of time in close contact with many of my fellow travellers from all around the globe.
This opportunity is ideal for me because it presents a new and unique challenge - and chance. It will allow me to exercise the skills I learned at the College of William and Mary in the real world and to experience in full another culture, with the purpose of understanding it not only for my own enrichment but also in order to better understand - and enrich - my students. This will be of great use to me professionally, as well, as I intend to undertake post-graduate studies in Anthropology specializing in the culture of East Asia. In the long run, in fact, it is my intention to teach at the university level; as such this teaching experience would be invaluable.
For this reason, I would like to teach adults. I would prefer to teach in Seoul, though I am flexible on this point. I have assembled all of the documents required to get a visa and am ready to work as soon as possible.
I look forward to expanding on both my hopes for teaching in South Korea and the many ways that I can contribute to a teaching program. Thank you for your time and consideration.
