I have been a teacher in Queensland, Australia since 1989. In this time I have taught:
• health and physical education, English and Studies of Society and the Environment to secondary students – Yr 8-12
• as a general classroom teacher for 2 years in an alternative education setting – students in yrs 4-10 who were suspended from their school for 5-20 days
• Elementary students – yr 6 classroom for 10 weeks and during relief teaching periods
• Adults at Bremer Institute of TAFE and as an instructor for St John Ambulance Australia
For the last 6 years I have worked as an Advisory Visiting Teacher – Behavior, assisting teachers of Prep-yr 10, to maintain students with challenging behaviors to remain in their classrooms. This assistance has been in the form of:
• modeling teaching strategies,
• conducting seminars on supportive classrooms to include students with special needs
• working collaboratively with teachers, administrative staff, students, parents and other support staff such as guidance officers, speech language therapists, to develop support plans for the individual students
• developing classroom resources such as visual timetables, individual goal/reward and social story booklets/cards and other classroom posters explaining teacher expectations eg. How to line up, sit on the carpet, asking for help.
My work as behavior support teacher allowed me to see best practice in many classrooms and developed my teaching skills through watching others teach curriculum in a variety of ways. Most of the students I worked with were in yrs Prep – 4 and the advice I received from early year specialists re teaching in a kinesthetic and visual way greatly developed my repertoire of skills for this age group.
Having two children now aged 11 and 15yrs, I know the importance of using play and to enhance learning. In whichever setting I am teaching in, I regularly use games to get to know my students, increase their social skills by taking turns, talking with each other and to reinforce concepts. These strategies will be useful in teaching English as a second language and I have developed a range of games and other visual posters to assist with getting my message across.
I am proficient in computer skills and regularly use word, power point, excel and email in my daily work practice.
