°ÀÇ°æÇè I  have taught ESL for two years in China.  Before that, in the USA I have taught for over 20 years.

Humanities Teacher/ Headmaster: Whitefield Academy, Overland Park, KS

These classes were largely written by my self and John Mason Shakelford.  We used the Harvard Classics and had the students read original source documents.  The classes covered the following topics.
1.    European history, taught 400 AD to the Modern Period
2.    Philosophy and Logic
3.    Period Literature/ English Grammar
4.    Formal Debate

The model is based off of Dorthy Sayers writings and The Logos School model.  In Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning she explains how students actually learn.  So we applied those ideas (classical education, the traditional British approach) to our school with great success.  Our high school students preformed consistently higher on standardized tests as mandated by the Department of Education.

I also taught Pre-Algebra (called transition math), Algebra, and Geometry at Whitefield using Saxon curriculum.

Middle School/ High School Teacher: St. Andrew's Academy, Helena, MT

I taught Algebra, Earth Science, Biology I, and Chemistry I.  I also taught Classical History (Greek and Roman.)

Strengths and Weaknesses:

1.    I am a very strong History/ Literature/ Creative Writing/ and Art Teacher.  I can handle formal English grammar and Algebra and Geometry.  I am a good Earth Science and Biology One teacher.  I have to work very hard to teach Chemistry and do not consider myself an advanced science teacher.
2.    If you need someone to teach English grammar, formal and creative writing, literature, poetry, culture, some drama, I will do an excellent job.
3.    I can cover basic math classes and do a fine job.
4.    I should not teach advanced hard sciences like Physics and Chemistry II.

Ä¿¹ö·¹ÅÍ/À̷¼ Dear Director:

My name is Donald Larsen.  I am a United States citizen and graduated from the Global TESOL College with an Advanced Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) specializing in tutoring English as a foreign language.  I also hold a TESOL Trainer certificate from Tesol Training International.  This credential allows me to train other teachers to be TESOL qualified.

For the past year I have taught adults and university students oral English.  I have also taught many courses in Business English, and trained college students to pass the IELTS placement exam.  This year has been very rewarding, I am well respected by both my students, colleagues, and especially my employer. My contract is finish in June and I may seek another position elsewhere in China.  Right now I am just exploring options.

In 2007 I have taught English to Chinese children successfully in Xian.  I enjoyed being apart of a Chinese teaching team and getting to know both my students and fellow teachers at Kidcastle.  My parents were impressed with the advances their children made in my classes.  However, I moved to Haikou at the completion of my contract to instruct college students and adults, a more challenging aspect to being an English teacher in China.

My entire life has been as an educator.  Even in the Army I spent years teaching young officers everything from how to communicate to survival skills.  I have taught children from the third grade though High school.  As a Headmaster, I trained other teachers and generated original curriculum.  I see working in China as a TESOL educator as an exciting challenge.  This will hone my personal talents as a teacher and allow me to share in a rich and wonderful culture.  I look forward to making a lasting contribution to your institution, and will strive to be one of the finest TESOL educators you have ever employed.

As far as education technique, I use a variety of approaches geared for the different learning styles.  There are times I am very formal and stress the fundamentals, while at other times I like to take the students outside, use music and art, be very relaxed.  In times past, my students have performed significantly above average on standardized tests while enjoying my classes.  Even in the Army, I earned an Army Commendation Metal for being the only teacher to graduate all of my students, approximately 60, from the very challenging Land Navigation Course.

I wish to find a new school by August 2008.  We are very excited about relocating to your area and making our contribution to the growth of your students and working with your staff.

Sincerely,

Donald M. Larsen
