It has been a very valuable experience, as it is a completely different teaching environment from my first ESL job and has taught me many things. This job has given experience with elementary students in a wide range of age groups and skill levels. It has also helped me learn how to manage a classroom completely independently. It has made me a better rounded teacher with experience in using a wide variety of teaching styles and focusing on multiple educational goals. Responsibilities with AKYEC: * talking with my co-teacher about individual students and classes * interacting with students before class begins * presenting the day's lesson and guiding students in it, making sure every student participates in class * increasing confidence in English speaking, especially interacting with foreigners * preparing the students for a speech contest in front of their classmates * once a term hosting a fun event day - movie and popcorn, flea market, etc. * preparing a report of each days lessons and sending it to the office * attending weekly online meetings to discuss company news and share advice with other teachers in the company * creating, administering and grading tests and quizzes * writing reports on each student's progress after testing * recommending when a student has mastered the current level and is ready to progress to the next one * being friendly with students, non-students and public school teachers in the hallways and lunchrooms * preparing for open classes that parents and public school teachers observe * checking to see student's book work is always completed * for safety, after class walking the students to the school gates 2. ESL INSTRUCTOR, INCHEON ENGLISH VILLAGE, INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA, 2008-2009 http://hi.icev.go.kr/ The Incheon English Village (I.C.E.V.) is a special school in the city of Incheon, South Korea. It is an English village that invites 250 new students from the city, aged nine to twelve, to stay for an entire week and practice using and develop further their English skills. The school's first rule was that students speak only in English. It provided the students opportunities to practice the English in realistic environments with native-English speakers. Classes simulated visits to the airport, immigration office, post office, hotel and other practical situations. ICEV offers its main program, a special academy on Saturday afternoons, and also branches out to work with many external programs. While there, I enjoyed teaching students of all ages, developing curriculum, judging speech contests and every other opportunity I was offered. Responsibilities with the Main Program Included: * Directing student arrivals * Providing orientation to each week’s new students * Supervising the cafeteria * Assessing the abilities and needs of students weekly * Teaching class materials * Developing audio and visual aids to assist in teaching classes * Leading after-dinner English-based activities * Training new incoming ESL Instructors * Conducting student performances * Writing and directing weekly student performances * Helping to strengthen student's ability to speak and listen to English * Organizing farewell events for students ICEV External Programs - Valuable Teaching and Curriculum Experiences Outside the Main Program SATURDAY MORNING ICEV CLASSES ICEV holds academy-style classes every Saturday afternoon. Students attend for three hours over twelve-week terms. Responsibilities Included: * Developing curriculum based on students needs and abilities * Incorporating parent suggestions into curriculum * Teaching a 'Beginners' class, which focused on reading, public speaking and pronunciation * Developing and grading homework * Developing quizzes and tests to assess ability, reinforce classroom lessons * Writing student reports on individual strengths and weaknesses, which were then translated into Korean for parents * Organizing end of term celebrations PUBLIC OFFICIALS PROGRAM, ONG JIN DISTRICT OFFICE I traveled to the Ong Jin District Office where I met with public officials to help them practice and improve their conversational and professional English. This was an extremely rewarding experience working with devoted adult students. Responsibilities Included: * Establishing students language abilities through increasingly complex questions * Leading and mediating classroom discussions * Introducing important phrases and vocabulary words * Developing and assessed homework * Giving positive feedback and reinforcement to each student * Engaging and mediated students in topical debates * Developing quizzes and assessed individual student ability * Developing both oral and written tests * Organizing educational participatory class events outside in the community - dinners, signing, etc. MOON YE CULTURE AND ARTS COLLEGE Food Stylist students from the Moon Ye Culture and Arts college were offered a special class at ICEV to help develop English in their future profession. The class focused heavily on food and cooking related phrases and vocabulary. Responsibilities Included: * Developing original curriculum based on individual student’s needs and abilities * Developing quizzes to emphasize educational curriculum * Developing tests to assess student grades * Assigning and graded translation homework * Conducting 'hands-on' classes in which teams of students read and listened to English directions for cooking and meal preparation SONGDO CONVENTIA, CONVENTION CENTER I attended a large convention and led a discussion with attendees focusing on vocabulary and phrases used when visiting a store. ICEV TEXTBOOK DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE ICEV's main program improved the curriculum it gives students each week using input given by all the teachers. I was part of the committee responsible for turning these suggestions into practical workbook exercises, as well as looking over the drafts of the new book for typographical errors JUDGE, ENGLISH SPEECH CONTEST Two other teachers and I judged a speech contest. The event was held at the Ong Jin District Office and featured students from Incheon’s islands. Participants were students ranging in ages from eight to fourteen, and were judged based on qualities like ability with English, delivery, and stage presence. Afterward we posed for photographs with the events winners, sponsors and organizers 3.
