To whom it may concern:

In response to your online posting for the ESL teaching position, I would like to introduce myself as a candidate to instruct conversational English. I have always held a particularly strong enthusiasm for teaching, sharing and communication by means of the arts and language.  This inclination began with a childhood steeped in the diversity of Los Angeles, was enhanced at some of the most culturally expansive academic institutions in the US, evolved with extensive travel (throughout the US, Europe, Asia, & Africa), and most recently took focus while instructing conversational English in Jeonju, Korea (2006-2007) and Xinzhou, China (2005-2006).

It was during this last experience that I began to see my talents emerge in the field of education, and was able to utilize much of my experience—as a writer, professional photographer, and avid seeker of knowledge—in a classroom setting.  I found great pleasure in bringing a new universe of thoughts and ideas to children through the vehicle of conversational English, and the response in turn was more than I could have possibly imagined.  Besides dialogue repetition and other standard techniques, I expanded and recreated lesson plans to include sketches & role playing, creation of art and poetry, the keeping of journals in English, comparative study of Korean, Chinese and Western works, the viewing of quality English-language movies, presentation & discussion of music/art/photographs (including my own pieces), etc.  I also initiated pen pal relationships between some of my students and children of friends in the US.  The theme I ubiquitously stressed to my students at the Hagwon in Jeonju, Korea and the middle school in Xinzhou, China was ¡°imagination¡±.  Being at the root of every exploration and assignment, the students seemed to find joy instead of challenge in each new experience.  In spite of conditions which often fell far short of reasonable expectation (both in my living and teaching environments), the motivation to succeed proved greater, and led to an expansion of my own understanding.

In terms of professional experience previous to this Korea posting, my background includes a wide variety of experiences, mainly focused in the arts, though also touching upon aspects of business management, planning & coordination, and public relations.  Such a multi-faceted background has proved valuable in advancing organizational goals, consensus building, intercultural interaction, and connecting with individuals on a personal level.  These skills are applicable in just about any setting, and I have used them with success in a wide array of endeavors.  Time and again the interplay of these factors and my creative interests have resulted in solutions outside the box of convention, yet fulfilling conventional needs in tangibly practical ways.  Never has this been more the case than during my recent instructional appointment in Korea. I wish to duplicate and expand upon that positive teaching experience in a new setting, again taking time to learn from the environment, people, and culture surrounding my everyday life.

With these facts in mind, I hope you¡¯ll recognize my strong potential to successfully fulfill your needs, and honor me with the trust and privilege of teaching in your country.  Thank you sincerely for your time and consideration.

Respectfully yours,

William McNeil
