I believe education is a privilege and a gift. It is with this understanding that I would like to be considered for a teaching position through your organization.
My motivation for applying for this position stems from my ambition to help students broaden their educational scope through the study of English. As a native English speaker of Chinese descent, I understand the power that studying foreign languages can have in a student’s life and the high value that global enterprises place on English proficiency. I believe teaching ESL can help a student develop an appreciation for different cultures and nurture their curiosity, knowledge and self-development. While I have spent a good part of my professional years in healthcare public relations, education is an industry to which I have always wanted to return.
As a public relations consultant and strategic adviser, intellectual capital is the foundation of my work and written/verbal communications is the medium. As a manager, I provide mentoring to junior staff and collaborative support to colleagues from different departments. In my personal endeavors, I have volunteered in different capacities to tutor youth in after-school programs, teach English courses to adult GED students, and serve as a writing coach for my extended network of friends and former colleagues.
At Columbia University, I had the opportunity to pursue diverse coursework, including English literature, environmental sciences, philosophy and psychology. Having spent time in both an engineering discipline and a humanities-focused track, I gained a broad knowledge base and appreciation for life-long learning. Based on my combination of education and experience, I feel I would be an excellent ESL teacher.
