To Whom It May Concern
My name is Clinton Jones and this is my cover letter with regards to trying to secure a Teaching English as a Foreign Language position at your school. I have been told to write about any teaching experience I have regarding teaching English as a foreign language. The short answer to that is none. I have never taught English as a foreign language to someone who cannot speak it plus I have never taught English outside of South Africa as well, this being the country of my birth and my current place of residence. I have how ever had some other teaching experience. This was at my old university which I graduated from where I was asked to teach a simple introduction to 3d software to their third year graduation students, as I myself graduated in the same discipline the year before. With regards to the teaching experience albeit quite short, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Imparting knowledge upon people who are willing to listen and help them progress no matter how small was really a gratifying experience. The structure was semi-formal whereby I showed them how to operate the software with them then being able to ask questions at anytime (very important) if they didn’t understand anything before spending the rest of the lesson using what lessons they had learned to explore the software in their own time.
Prior to this whilst I was still at the University, our curriculum involved having the 3rd year students be ’assisted’ by the 1st year students. This is a somewhat mentorship style program whereby the 3rd year students train/teach the 1st years students in what they must be competent in because they actually then assist in making the 3rd years students graduation films through out the year during the production phases. The 4th year students do this to the 2nd years as well so a working relationship can be built which can allow for future contacts to be developed once in the industry. In the end all the students get a chance to assist for two years before having them mentor students in the years below them. There were guidelines set out in the curriculum to keep a certain standard, which those mentoring had to mark the overall assessment of how the younger students handled the assist program. That about covers the extent of my teaching experience, other that showing my friends a thing or two at the piano with any music related questions they have and if I know the answer.
Being accepted to teach abroad would also fulfil another dream of working abroad allowing me to explore other cultures and people. Being able to see the world is something I want to be able to do for many more years to come. I have only been outside South Africa twice and that was to go to London for two short holidays. Being in a new country with having to explore the city, its people and its many landmarks was a fascinating experience which is one of the many benefits one must make use of, if one finds the opportunity to travel outside ones own country.
I consider myself to be a friendly easy going person with a wide variety of interests with a strong work ethic where by things that are expected of me will be done on time. Another trait I consider myself to have is to be quite open-minded. I enjoy listening to different views concerning various subject matters and find reading philosophy now and then very interesting as long it isn’t too heavy.
